BK Econometrics, LLP specializes in data -- designing it, working with it, analyzing it, and reporting on it.  Most of our projects focus on willingness to pay estimation using discrete-choice approaches, such as conjoint analysis, ranking procedures, contingent valuation or stated-choice experiments.  BK Econometrics, LLP has taken on full projects, from the design stage to the analysis and reporting stage, but we also do piecemeal work, for example designing stated-choice experiments for clients who do their own analysis and reporting once the data are collected.

Design of stated-choice studies
BK Econometrics, LLP has developed a set of proprietary procedures for designing choice sets for stated-choice experiments and testing the designs to verify their expected performance.  Generally, this service takes about a week and goes approximately like this:

  • Initial phone call to discuss study objectives and client's ideas about attributes to be included in the study.  BK Econometrics, LLP provides advice on number of attributes, number of attribute levels, number of alternatives, and sample size, and how decisions about these will affect estimability.   We will also discuss pre-tests, or waves of the survey to be administered, and any prior information the client has about expected values of the attributes.
  • Once client finalizes his or her decisions on the above-mentioned study parameters and provides any pre-test results, BK Econometrics, LLP develops a choice-set design and tests this design for estimability and, if applicable, efficiency.
  • BK Econometrics, LLP presents client with a proposed design (sometimes two or more alternative designs are presented).  Client ponders and decides on possibly revising the design.  We charge a flat fee for this service, so revision is an assumed part of the process.

Data analysis, econometric modeling, and willingness to pay estimation
BK Econometrics, LLP has experience working with parametric and non-parametric models for willingness to pay estimation.  Recent projects have involved the use of multinomial probit, rank-ordered logit, mixed (or random parameters) logit, and the ABERS ("stairstep") procedure, as well as the more commonly used conditional logit and binary logit and probit models.
BK Econometrics, LLP has also worked with complex survey data and dealt with weighting issues and procedures for income imputation.
BK Econometrics, LLP is equipped to work in Stata 10 and prefers receiving data in this format, though other data formats can be accommodated.
While
BK Econometrics, LLP prefers to do the hands-on data work, we are also open to projects where our input is simply to provide guidance to other researchers on complex modeling issues, reporting, or to peer review existing studies.  We are located in the Washington, D.C. area and are generally available for in-person consultations, as well as phone/e-mail exchanges.

Peer review of willingness to pay studies
BK Econometrics, LLP regularly peer reviews manuscripts on experimental design and econometric issues in willingness to pay estimation for academic journals, including the Journal of Statistical Inference and Planning, Environmental and Resource Economics, Agricultural and Resource Economics Review, American Journal of Agricultural Economics, Journal of Environmental Management, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, Land Economics, Scandinavian Journal of Forest Research, Water Resources Research, Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics, University of Minnesota Press, and Routledge Books.
We are open to other types of peer-review projects.

Expert testimony on statistical and econometric issues
There is a reason our motto is, "Good, clean data crunching."  That's what we do, and we're always happy to testify to that fact.  We're also happy to analyze the expert reports of others, again and always, with our own motto firmly in mind.

Technical writing and editing
Owner, Barbara Kanninen, has had books and articles published for all ages, from preschool to age 100 (or above).  She specializes in "user-friendly" language, even for complex econometric and statistical topics.  She has experience writing and editing books, project reports, and conference reports, as well as editing technical manuscripts for non-English speakers.
